Islam in Asia

This course examines the dynamics of Islam's spread from its geographical centre in Arabia to Asia, in both historical and contemporary contexts. Taking a border-crossing thematic approach, the course will cover the lands "across the Oxus river" (Transoxiana, or Mawarannahr), from Central Asia to Southeast Asia in a comparative manner, addressing themes relevant to both majority-Muslim settings and minority groups; in addition, students will be given windows to explore the fundamentals of Islam as a religious system as well as a historical phenomenon. Covered topics will include the emergence and consolidation of networks of knowledge and ritual, the relationship between localised practices and ideals of "orthodox purity", political visions of Islam, Islam and ethnicity, and others.
