The Political Development of Western Europe

This is a senior seminar on the political development of Western Europe. Students will examine the following questions: what explains the formation of the modern nation-state in Western Europe? What explains the long run economic growth of Europe? How did democracy as we know it now come to Western Europe? What explains the rise of political cleavages and different party systems? Why did countries in Western Europe adopt different patterns of labor relations and forms of redistribution? Students will learn approaches to address the above questions, and will gain and hone analytical skills that can be applied to historical questions as well as contemporary comparative issues. Preference given to senior and junior government majors.
