FWS: Revolution & Renewal: China's Modern Transformation

What does the future hold for China? This question increasingly occupies the minds of policy makers, businesspeople, and intellectuals the world over. In this course, students will explore China's past for insights that will prepare them to think critically about China's position in the world today and tomorrow. We will examine multiple facets of China's changing sense of itself and its destiny during the twentieth century, from Chinese conceptions of revolution and political order to the impact of economic development on China's identity. Readings will include works by Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and other historical figures, as well as writings by influential scholars such as Henry Kissinger and Jonathan Spence. Writing assignments will allow students to consider what China's past may mean for its future.
