Course Description

This seminar introduces and investigates a range of critical writing on the avant-garde in music. We will read classic texts about the avant-garde (Bürger, Adorno, Huyssen) and the neo-avant-garde (Buchloh, Foster) before turning to issues of contemporary concern: global and vernacular avant-gardes.
