The Odyssey in Ithaca

The Odyssey in Ithaca: in this course, we will study the entirety of Homer’s Odyssey in Emily’s Wilson English translation alongside global adaptations of this age-old epic, including Christopher Nolan’s recent film. We will focus on how writers, musicians, and filmmakers the world over have engaged with central themes of the work such as migration, conflict, homecoming, and identity, from opera to animé, Dante to Joyce. Amidst a diverse variety of world poetry, music, and film, we will view a live multimedia performance of Ukrainian poet Olena Boryshpolets’ New Calypso as part of her November residency at Cornell. Finally, we will explore the Odyssey’s special relationship to the place called Ithaca, in both the cultural imagination and our own gorges surroundings.
