Course Description

This course will primarily focus on the adjudication phase of the criminal process including: (1) charging & pleading, severance & joinder, and pretrial detention; (2) the role and function of the grand jury as a screening mechanism and investigative tool; (3) the right to counsel, including the right to the effective assistance of counsel and conflict-free counsel; (4) fair trial procedures including rights afforded by the Confrontation, Double Jeopardy and Due Process Clauses, (5) the law of guilty pleas; (6) jury composition and selection; and (7) the basics of sentencing practice and procedure.
