Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.

This course will cover several modern regression techniques. The topics to be covered include linear regression (review), model selection, regularization methods (ridge and lasso), logistic/probit/Poisson regressions, causal inference, quantile regression, and nonparametric curve estimation. Some topics might be omitted because of time constraints. The course discusses theory and practice of those methods, but is more focused on theory.


Prerequisites STSCI 3080, STSCI 3200, STSCI 4030 or equivalents.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to fit and carry out inference for various statistical models.
  • Students will be able to identify the implications and limitations of the statistical models.
  • Students will be able to identify how to select appropriate statistical models.
