Why is the black home and black place an unstable concept in the United States? Why does spatial disinvestment, gentrification, redlining, and eminent domain disproportionately target black people and families? What effect does this instability and erasure have on the feeling of black home, black gender, domesticity, and psychological well-being? This interdisciplinary course explores these questions through examination of black geographical and critical theories, architectural theory and history, painting, sculpture, and film about the black home and black domesticity. Topics and objects of study range from the slave cabin and the shack to racial suburbs and urban environments, from psychological theories about the black family to queer renderings of home and gender—all toward an understanding of the struggles of black space and place making.
