CHEME 4240

Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.

Topics include derivation of conservation equations; conductive and convective heat transfer; low Reynolds number fluid dynamics; lubrication theory; inviscid fluid dynamics; boundary layer theory; non-Newtonian fluid mechanics (polymeric liquids and suspensions); surface tension; and stability analysis, and turbulent flow.

Prerequisites CHEME 3230 or MAE 3230 or equivalent.

Last 4 Terms Offered (None)

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the assumptions that underlie Newtonian fluid mechanics, identify examples of fluids that violate these assumption, and analyze quantitative measurements that reveal such non-Newtonian behavior.
  • Analyze transport problems using regular perturbation methods, boundary layer theory, and similarity scaling analysis.
  • Solve viscous dominated fluid flow problems using multipole methods and lubrication analysis.
