CHEME 4620

CHEME 4620

Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.

The second part of a two-semester capstone course sequence that integrates chemical engineering design with a research component. Students will work in teams to apply core chemical engineering principles to solve open-ended problems through the application of cutting-edge research methods, process simulation, systems engineering, and economic analysis, culminating in a comprehensive technical design project. Projects may focus on traditional process design, product design, or on research-driven investigations that require experimental, computational, or hybrid approaches. Some teams will engage company sponsors for key process/product data and design constraints. Students will develop teamwork skills and professional communication skills through weekly presentations of their work culminating in a final presentation to a panel of internal and external appraisers.

Prerequisites CHEME 4320.

Enrollment Information Enrollment limited to: Chemical Engineering seniors.

Last 4 Terms Offered 2026SP, 2025SP, 2024SP, 2023SP

Learning Outcomes

  • Design an integrated chemical engineering process that includes realistic design parameters and applies appropriate technical principles.
  • Design individual unit operations within an overall chemical engineering process using industry-relevant process simulation tools.
  • Perform a technoeconomic analysis to assess the feasibility of a process design.
  • Effectively communicate technical results and design recommendations in written and oral formats.
  • Integrate experimental or research findings with engineering design when applicable.
  • Apply primary research and patent literature relevant to chemical and biomolecular engineering designs.
  • Apply project management principles to develop a comprehensive engineering design as a team.
  • Apply leadership and team work tools and principles to work effectively in a small engineering team.
