Course information provided by the 2026-2027 Catalog.

This course explores an unsettling phenomenon: white South African Afrikaners, the architects and for more than 40 years the political exponents of apartheid, now cast themselves as victims of discrimination. Consequently, they now, in relation to the US, enjoy a privileged status as refugees. This course seeks to provide an account of how we have arrived at this strange historical conjuncture. Those who, for decades, and with impunity, where the perpetrators of racism now claim that they are victims. How did we arrive at this most inexplicable moment? What forces are at play to allow for not only the dissemination of this discourse, but now enable these historical perpetrators to enjoy preferential refugee status?
