Field Lab in Global Plant Biodiversity and Vegetation

Course information provided by the 2018-2019 Catalog.

An intensive three-week field course in Latin America over winter break (most years taken in Patagonia) studying local vegetation and flora and the relationship of vegetation to climate, geography and geology. In the field, students will receive lectures on the vegetation, learn to identify dominant plants, and undertake a directed set of vegetation transects that record species diversity and ecological parameters.


Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: PLBIO 2300.

Outcomes

  • Interpret the distribution of vegetation in relation to climate and soils.
  • Observe carefully in the field, take precise and easily interpretable field notes, conduct collaborative scientific data collection and analysis.
  • Develop skills for the identification of plant species in the field.
  • Master specific methods of data collection using ecological transects.

Comments Students must enroll in PLBIO 2301 to receive a final grade in PLBIO 2302. R is recorded for satisfactory progress at the end of the session.

  • Instruction Mode: In Person

    Taught in Patagonia. Prerequisite: PLBIO 2300. Class travels to Patagonia (Chile) on January 2 and returns on January 19. Students receive an "R" grade for PLBIO 2301 and must enroll in PLBIO 2302 during the spring semester to receive a final grade and the 2 total academic credits towards graduation. Students should not enroll in another Winter session class.
